From cozy dugout to comfortable farmhouse

Walnut Grove’s most famous family living in a dugout is one “claim to fame” for the small community near Plum Creek in southwest Minnesota. When the Ingalls family came to the area in 1874, their first home was in the side of a hill. A replica of a dugout has been built on the site of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum where memorabilia from the Ingalls family is on exhibit. In 1894, just 20 years after the Ingalls had arrived in Walnut Grove, Laura and Almonzo Wilder, with their only child Rose, traveled from their current home in DeSmet, South Dakota, to the Mansfield, Missouri, area where they spent the rest of their lives.
