The worlds fastest 5K was ran by Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia in 12:37. Dallas Patton of Finley can run a 5K in 18.40 qualifying him to compete in the 2013 Down Under Sports in Australia.

Down Under Sports was founded in February 1989 by George O’Scanlon of New Zealand. O’Scanlon loved athletics, especially American football (gridiron). His desire over the years was to promote gridiron, not only to the people of New Zealand but also to Australia where he lived for many years. He also established Down Under Hoops Classic and Down Under International Games.

Using the common language of sports the Down Under programs bridge the continents and provide a forum for athletes from around the globe to compete head to head in the sports they love.

Patton was selected to take part in Down Under Sports after placing 33rd out of 200 during state cross-country this past year.

“It’s a great experience for a student and he has a lot of potential for his age,” said Rick Anderson, head coach of the Griggs County Cross-Country team. “Dallas set a lot of goals for himself this past year. His main goal was to get under 18 minutes. He didn’t quite make it, so he will be craving it next year. Although it’s expensive, competing in Down Under this summer will keep him in shape.”

In order to attend Dallas was told to raise $5,500. After receiving some donations and holding a spaghetti dinner in Finley, he now has $3,500 left to raise.

“It’s a real honor to chosen to run on the North Central Team,” said Dallas. “About three weeks before the competition I will receive my uniform, team information, and itinerary of events I will take part in. I’m excited and sure that it will be a memorable experience.”

Down Under takes place July 2 through 11. So far, Dallas knows of two races he will be taking part in; both in Gold Coast, Australia.

The 2013 Down Under Sports program will include competition in track and field, cross country, wrestling, football, volleyball and basketball.

Dallas along with friends and family will be hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in Cooperstown on May 5th from 11 AM – 2 PM at the Cooperstown Senior Center.
