New Century Press general manager Lisa Miller welcomes Jordan Harmelink to the editorial staff as a sports writer.

Harmelink will join Jeff T. Benson (sports editor) in providing in-depth local coverage on six area high schools: Boyden-Hull, Central Lyon, George-Little Rock, Trinity Christian, West Lyon and Western Christian in the respective publications, Lyon County Reporter, Sioux County Index-Reporter and West Lyon Herald.

Harmelink is originally from Sioux Center and graduated from Unity Christian High School in 2008. He graduates from Dordt College this spring with a bachelor of arts degree in communications and a minor in journalism.

He is one of three siblings of Harlan and Kathy Harmelink of Sioux Center. His older brother is Josh and younger brother is Jacob.

Harmelink is engaged to Rachel Tennant, originally of Lynden, Wash., currently residing and working in Sioux Falls, SD.

During Jordan’s free time he enjoys spending time with his family, playing slow-pitch softball, video games, trying to golf and going for runs. He is an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Currently, he is a member of the Dordt College club lacrosse team.

“I look forward to this opportunity to be teaming up with Jeff Benson, bringing you the sports stories within the Lyon County Reporter, West Lyon Herald and Sioux County Index-Reporter,” said Harmelink. “I am looking forward to bringing you, the readers, the action of our Northwest Iowa coverage schools.”

Benson has over 25 years in the newspaper industry as a sports editor. He has provided Iowa Newspaper Award winning coverage since joining New Century Press (Lyon County Reporter) in January 2007, being named for best sports page in 2009 and 2010 (Lyon County Reporter).

Benson’s extensive background in the industry has allowed him to cover numerous high schools over the years, as well as the Iowa State Cyclones, Iowa Hawkeyes and University of Northern Iowa Panthers.

Benson is single and lives in Rock Rapids. He is the father of two children, Ashley (20), a 2011 Central Lyon graduate, and Alex (18), a freshman at Northwestern College, and member of the Northwestern men’s soccer program.

Benson and Harmelink assure readers they will provide a brand of local sports coverage which loyal readers can be proud of.

“I look forward to having the opportunity to work directly with Jordan, as well as with the Boyden-Hull, Trinity Christian and Western Christian coaches and sports teams,” said Benson. “I want to personally welcome Jordan aboard and know his vision and mine are a lot alike. We should make the perfect team.”
